Neuronal Gymnastics [42]

By labeling actin in neuronal cells Prof. Kaes and his colleagues at the University of Leipzig can see the centripetal backward movement of actin, which is believed to be essential in many different kinds of cell movement. The bundled actin structures poking out from the leading edge of the neuron are known as filopodia, they are used by neurons as external chemical and mechanical sensors to guide turns and extension.
